What is an environmental impact assessment

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process that results in an environmentally-oriented management decision on the implementation of planned economic or other activities.

EIA is carried out with the help of:

Assessment of the existing state of environmental components in the area of planned activity implementation;
Analysis, assessment and consideration of project solutions to identify possible adverse effects on the environment and public health;
Development of measures to prevent and reduce the possible negative environmental impact of the object of implementation.
Environmental impact assessment may be carried out during the development of:
Site (route) selection materials;
Feasibility study of investments;
Construction projects of facilities and complexes.

During the EIA process, the public is informed about the planned activity and its possible impact on the environment in order to identify and take into account public preferences.

Purpose of EIA
The purpose of environmental impact assessment is to prevent environmental degradation, restore natural systems disturbed by economic activities, balance the planned economic activity, create favorable conditions for human life, develop measures reducing environmental hazard level of the planned activity and is the basis for making decisions on implementation of any project.
